Rabea Yousuf Chaudry modernizes the Islamic tradition of calligraphy with a personal touch.
When painting I work almost exclusively with the inverted stamping technique. With this technique, the foreground, or "stamp", surrenders itself to the background in order for the Arabic calligraphy to be seen.
The necessity of surrendering the ego in order to create beauty within one's self and the world is emphasized throughout the teachings of all great spiritual traditions. In my work I seek to capture the magnificence that inevitably results when one is able to tame the self, even if this mastery over the ego lasts for only a moment.
Although in each of my pieces the colors, textures and Arabic calligraphy dance on the canvas in unique ways, all of my work comes together to echo the same message: Selfless empathy and generosity, if practiced, can bring us all closer to realizing our full potential as individuals and collective beings. Even though our world seems to be growing further and further apart, I believe that we can put the pieces back together if we first learn to let go of ourselves.
