About the Author

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi is the executive director and founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning. Established in 1995 to support education and health, AIL has served more than 10 million Afghans and was the first organization to offer human rights and leadership training to Afghan women. Dr. Yacoobi is also a board member and grantee of the Global Fund for Women.

She is a strong advocate of empowering women and transforming their lives through education. She is an Ashoka Fellow and was named social entrepreneur by the Skoll Foundation and the Schwab Foundation. She has received many awards, including the Peter Gruber Foundation Women’s Rights Prize, the Kravis Prize in Leadership, the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights, the Afghan National Peace Award, and the German Media Award. Dr. Yacoobi has honorary doctorates from four universities, serves on the board of Creating Hope International and is an advisor to the Fetzer Institute, Women’s Refugee Commission, and New Global Citizens.

About the Photographer

Alissa Everett is an American photojournalist known for creating beautiful images in the world's most troubled areas, focusing on the humanity and dignity of people worldwide. Since 2003, she has covered conflicts in Darfur, Gaza, the West Bank, Pakistan and the DRC, as well as many travel features across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and South America. Alissa's photography has featured in publications such as, TIME, Stern, Reuters, Sunday Times of London, San Francisco Chronicle, Popular Photography and Traveler Overseas magazines. Her non-profit clients include, the Millennium Promise, Women's Refugee Commission, HEAL Africa and the World Food Program. She has also been featured in "O" the Oprah Magazine and Popular Photography, and in 2009 starred in "In Harm's Way" a reality documentary show about war photographers on the CW. She is also the founder of Exposing Hope, a not-for-profit using photography to raise awareness and funds for survivors of human rights abuses. She is currently based in New York.
